Check Your Car: Five Common Breakdowns on the Road to the Coast

Summer travel, with its high temperatures, traffic jams, and fully loaded vehicles, presents a significant challenge for any car. While winter is often associated with mechanical problems, summer heat can expose worn-out parts and cause unexpected roadside stops. A basic car check before embarking on a vacation is therefore essential.

Drivers should pay close attention to the battery, tires, cooling system, and any indicators of clutch or charging system malfunctions. Batteries, though stressed by winter cold, are also vulnerable to summer conditions. High temperatures, frequent short trips, stop-and-go traffic, and the increased use of electronic devices can overload the battery and alternator. Slow engine starts, dimming lights, and intermittent electrical issues can signal a weakened battery, especially if it's four or five years old.

Tire condition is critical for long journeys. Worn or damaged tires that might withstand short city drives can fail after hours of high-speed travel. Inspect tires for cracks, bulges, deformations, or other damage. A tire that consistently loses pressure could have a slow leak, damage, or a faulty valve. Tire pressure should be adjusted according to the vehicle's load, following manufacturer recommendations typically found on the door frame, fuel cap, or in the owner's manual.

Many newer cars lack a spare tire, instead providing a temporary repair kit. Drivers should confirm they have either a spare tire or a repair kit and understand how to use it before a breakdown occurs. While a kit can handle minor punctures, it's useless for severe damage. If a spare tire is present, check its pressure and condition. Essential tools like the jack, lug wrench, and any locking lug nut key should also be verified.
