Chelsea sign Argentina’s World Cup star Valentin Barco from Strasbourg

Chelsea has secured the signing of Argentinian World Cup player Valentin Barco, who joins from sister club Strasbourg on a seven-year contract. The 22-year-old becomes Chelsea's seventh acquisition during the current transfer window, signaling a significant squad overhaul under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Barco's arrival marks the second player transfer between Chelsea and Strasbourg this window, following Emmanuel Emegha. This deal is the 13th transaction between the two clubs, which share an ownership group, since the beginning of last season. Barco was a member of the Argentinian squad that reached the World Cup final, notably involved in a heated exchange with Jude Bellingham during the semi-final match against England.

Versatile enough to play at left-back or in midfield, Barco previously had a short stint in the Premier League with Brighton three seasons ago. He initially moved to Strasbourg on loan from Brighton in 2024 before signing permanently a year later, contributing to the club's qualification for the Conference League.

Chelsea's transfer activity has been robust this summer. In addition to Barco, the club confirmed the signing of veteran striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton on Saturday. Other recent arrivals include Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. Marco Palestra, Emegha, and Geovany Quenda have also been added to the squad.
