Chiang Wan-an proposes no-confidence vote; KMT central committee currently has no specific stance

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has floated the idea of a no-confidence vote against Premier Cho Jung-tai, suggesting it as a way to hold him politically accountable for a toxic oil incident. Chiang stated that such a move would require consensus within the Kuomintang (KMT) and support from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). He believes that if a no-confidence vote could lead to Premier Cho's resignation over the scandal, it would be the ideal outcome.

If we can use a no-confidence vote to make Premier Cho Jung-tai step down for the toxic oil incident and take political responsibility, that would naturally be the best way.

However, a KMT party official indicated that the party's central committee currently holds no specific stance on the mayor's proposal, while respecting his views and the KMT caucus's opinions. The party is aware of the discussions surrounding a potential no-confidence vote.

Meanwhile, KMT Chairwoman Chu Chen-wen declared at a party meeting that the KMT has transformed from a "flock of sheep into a pride of lions," representing the people's voice and Taiwan's spirit. She outlined the party's goals for the upcoming local elections, aiming to retain KMT-governed cities and make significant gains in traditionally Democratic Progressive Party-held areas. The party also seeks to advance blue-white cooperation and local integration, with the ultimate aim of securing a majority in the legislature and winning the presidency in 2028.
