Chiapas electoral institute publishes 2027 calendar for renewal of 40 lawmakers and 125 mayors

Chiapas has set out the timetable for its 2027 elections, when voters will renew all 40 seats in the state Congress and choose 125 mayors on June 6.

The Institute of Elections and Citizen Participation of Chiapas said candidates for local lawmakers and mayors will register from March 21 to 26, 2027. Authorities will announce which candidacies have been approved from April 11 to 15. A separate period, running from March 27 to May 7, will allow candidates to be replaced after resignations linked to investigations or sanctions.

Precampaigning will take place from Feb. 3 to 12, followed by the formal campaign period from May 4 to June 2. Mayors seeking reelection or a seat in Congress must leave office by Jan. 9, while lawmakers must resign by March 8.

If the current municipal president wishes to seek reelection through a party different from the one that nominated him in 2025, the deadline is Sept. 29 of this year.

The municipality of Pantelhó will hold its election alongside the June 2027 vote after extraordinary elections there on Aug. 31, 2025. Officials seeking office in Pantelhó must also resign by Jan. 9. The institute said a sitting mayor who wants to seek reelection with a different party from the one that nominated him in 2025 must meet a Sept. 29 deadline this year.

The calendar contains 132 activities across 23 areas and 10 responsible units. These include 23 preliminary actions, 71 preparatory activities, 20 coordination activities, the election day jointly handled by the state institute and Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, and 17 post-election activities. The electoral roll contains 3,780,216 voters, including 1,817,992 men and 1,962,224 women.
