Chiayi's Own Rambutan: Zhongpu Cultivation Succeeds After 10 Years, Yielding Chewier, Seed-Separating Fruit

For a decade, farmers in Zhongpu Township, Chiayi County, Taiwan, have dedicated themselves to cultivating and refining rambutan, a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia. Their efforts have culminated in a successful improvement of the fruit, making it more appealing to local consumers.

Led by Cai Zhicheng, the head of the citrus production and marketing team at the Zhongpu Township Farmers' Association, the project involved introducing Southeast Asian rambutan seeds and meticulously developing new varieties. The result is a rambutan plant that grows tall and robust, with a harvest season from August to October. The improved fruit boasts a sweeter, chewier texture, and crucially, its flesh separates cleanly from the seed, a significant advantage over the original varieties where the flesh clings stubbornly to the seed.

Cai Zhicheng explained the challenges faced during cultivation, including managing pests like ants and stink bugs, and protecting the plants from cold damage, particularly during severe winter cold snaps. One particularly harsh winter resulted in the loss of a quarter of the orchard's plants, highlighting the ongoing efforts to overcome environmental hurdles.

Li Ningjie, the general manager of the Zhongpu Township Farmers' Association, expressed pride in the farmers' achievements. She noted that residents can now enjoy fresh, locally grown rambutans without traveling to Southeast Asia. With approximately 10 hectares now dedicated to cultivation, the improved Zhongpu rambutan is highly sought after. The fruit's plump, juicy flesh and easy seed separation contribute to its market value, with prices at the Taipei Agricultural Produce and Marketing Corporation potentially reaching NT$150 to NT$200 per kilogram. The current season is considered the prime time to enjoy this improved local delicacy.

With the farmers' efforts, our fellow villagers can now buy and eat fresh rambutans locally in Zhongpu without having to go to Southeast Asian countries.
