Child poisoned after eating moisture-absorbing packet from cake in Antalya

A young boy in Antalya, Turkey, narrowly escaped a serious poisoning incident after mistaking a moisture-absorbing packet from a chocolate cake for chocolate sauce. The incident occurred when Alpaslan Büyüközer was watching a movie with his family and decided to have a sweet treat.

While opening a packaged chocolate cake purchased from a market, Büyüközer found a small packet inside. Believing it to be chocolate sauce, he poured its contents onto the cake and consumed it. His family quickly realized something was wrong when they saw the empty packet. They contacted the Poison Control Center, which advised them to seek immediate medical attention.

My son wanted to eat something sweet. When he went to the kitchen, he ate the chocolate cake we bought from the market. He mistook the packet that came out of the cake for chocolate sauce and poured it on top. When I didn't see him for a long time, I went to him. When I saw the empty packets, I asked him if he ate them. He said, 'Wasn't it chocolate sauce?' We panicked at that moment.

At Antalya Training and Research Hospital, tests confirmed the packet contained iron oxide, a substance that was visible in the child's stomach and intestines on an X-ray. Alpaslan experienced seizures during his treatment and was kept under observation for three days before being discharged. His mother, İlay Büyüközer, expressed her shock and fear, stating they could have lost their son.

The family is still investigating the cause of the seizures. The ordeal has left the child traumatized, with him now reluctant to even pass by the hospital. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of checking packaged food items carefully.
