Child Stuck in Kindergarten Climbing Frame in Helsinki

A child narrowly avoided injury after becoming trapped in a climbing frame at a kindergarten in Helsinki's Puotinharju area. The incident occurred on Tuesday when the child, who is under five years old, fell between two footrests on the rotating play structure.

Kindergarten staff initially tried to free the child by lifting and turning the structure, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The Helsinki Rescue Department was then called to the scene. Firefighters also attempted to dislodge the child by manipulating the frame before resorting to a more drastic measure.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Jaakko Pohjonen, the child was the "just the right size" and had landed at an angle that made escape impossible. Ultimately, the rescue team had to saw off one of the footrests to free the child.

Despite the frightening situation, the child remained calm throughout the ordeal. Pohjonen commended the kindergarten staff for their presence and ability to soothe the child. The climbing frame has since been taken out of use. Pohjonen noted that such incidents are rare, and while play equipment is generally safe, this particular structure had a design flaw that allowed a child of the right size and in the right position to become stuck.
