Colombia earthquake: At least 20 dead in 7.4 magnitude tremor

A powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake rocked western Colombia on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 20 people and causing widespread damage. The tremors were felt most intensely in the western regions of the country, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings and trapping individuals beneath rubble.

The city of Pereira appears to have borne the brunt of the disaster, with Mayor Mauricio Salazar reporting that at least 18 fatalities occurred within the city limits. Rescue efforts are underway as emergency services work to free those still trapped in the debris of collapsed structures.

In response to the devastation, several airports have been forced to close their operations due to the damage sustained from the earthquake. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced via the social media platform X that he is traveling to Pereira to offer support to the victims and oversee the response efforts. The full extent of the damage and the final casualty count are still being assessed.
