Chilean climber dies, another injured in accident on Peru's highest mountain

A Chilean mountaineer has died and his companion was injured in an accident while climbing the north peak of Nevado Huascarán, Peru's highest mountain at 6,768 meters (22,205 feet). The incident occurred in the Áncash region, a popular destination for high-altitude climbing.

Official sources reported that the deceased climber, identified as 21-year-old Andrés Regueira, fell into an abyss for reasons yet to be determined. Michael Millán, 31, the surviving companion, managed to alert the authorities in Áncash. A team from the High Mountain Police and rescuers from the Socorro Andino organization were dispatched to the scene to recover Regueira's body.

The accident happened just one day after the temporary restriction between Camp 1 and Camp 2 on Huascarán was lifted. This restriction had been in place since July 19 to facilitate the search for three Peruvian climbers who disappeared on July 14. The mountain has seen other fatal incidents this year, including an avalanche on July 16 that killed a Peruvian porter and injured a foreign tourist and their guide.
