Chilean customs busts counterfeit ink and toner assembly ring

Chilean Customs has disrupted a significant smuggling ring that was importing components to assemble counterfeit printer ink and toner cartridges domestically. The operation involved bringing in separate elements like labels, cartridges, and packaging through different ports to evade detection.

Rodrigo Díaz, director of Metropolitan Customs, explained that the scheme aimed to circumvent intellectual property laws by creating products that falsely appeared to be original. The investigation began when customs detected the import of fake HP labels via courier from China. This led to the discovery of similar shipments containing labels for HP, Canon, and Epson brands.

Authorities intercepted a total of 44,923 counterfeit labels, along with generic packaging and over 170,000 cartridges and ink bottles. This successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat intellectual property theft and protect consumers from fraudulent goods entering the market.
