China Accelerates J-36 Development: Fifth Prototype Emerges Amidst US Pursuit of F-47

Recent images circulating online reportedly show a fifth testbed for China's next-generation fighter jet, developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation. Unofficially referred to as the J-36, the aircraft appears to feature changes to its air intake and engine exhaust systems, suggesting the program is actively progressing.

The images, which began appearing online around July 23, 2026, have led defense media to speculate about the fifth prototype. However, neither the Chinese government, the People's Liberation Army, nor the Chinese aerospace industry has provided official confirmation. The exact date of the flight remains unverified, and the reported "fifth prototype" status is not independently confirmed.

Analysts are examining the limited-quality footage to determine if observed differences in the aircraft's shape are due to camera angles or represent new configurations. Some reports suggest the aircraft may incorporate diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI) combined with concealed engine exhausts, similar to earlier prototypes. Variations across testbeds could indicate Chengdu is evaluating different designs before finalizing the J-36's configuration.

However, the emergence of this new testbed does not confirm that the J-36 has completed development or entered initial production. Significant visible changes to the air intake and engine exhaust systems suggest the development process is still underway. Claims of limited early production lack supporting evidence, such as production numbers, standardized designs, or delivery to military evaluation units.

The aircraft first gained international attention on December 26, 2024, with flight footage showing a diamond-shaped, tailless design with three air intakes. Reuters verified the location of that footage in Chengdu but could not independently confirm the recording date. Beijing has yet to officially name the aircraft, with the designation J-36 originating from observers.
