China and Chile seek to deepen economic ties and technological cooperation

China and Chile are actively seeking to strengthen their economic relationship and broaden cooperation in cutting-edge technology, particularly in artificial intelligence and the digital economy. This initiative was highlighted during a meeting in Beijing between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Chilean counterpart, Francisco Pérez Mackenna.

Wang Yi emphasized the importance of aligning development strategies, advancing existing cooperative projects, and exploring new opportunities in AI and digital fields. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Chile's interest lies in enhancing scientific and technological innovation, AI, and human capital development, while also fostering closer ties between their industrial supply chains.

Chilean Foreign Minister Pérez Mackenna conveyed his country's eagerness to attract greater Chinese investment. He affirmed Chile's commitment to maintaining an open market and providing a conducive business environment for Chinese companies. This aligns with Santiago's broader goals for Pérez Mackenna's tour, which includes attracting investment, diversifying Chile's exports, and identifying new areas for collaboration.

Economically, China stands as Chile's primary trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $67.1 billion in 2025. Notably, Chile is one of the few countries globally that maintains a trade surplus with China, exceeding $14.3 billion last year. Both nations are also commemorating significant milestones: two decades since their free trade agreement took effect and the tenth anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
