China and Philippines trade accusations after sailor injured at sea

A dispute has erupted in the South China Sea after a confrontation between Chinese and Philippine vessels left a Philippine sailor injured. The incident occurred near the Second Thomas Shoal, where the Philippines maintains a grounded warship as a military outpost.

The Philippine military stated that a Chinese coastguard boat approached the outpost and harassed its vessel, injuring a sailor with blows to the head. However, China's coastguard rejected this account, claiming that Philippine boats ignored warnings and initiated the collision by ramming a Chinese patrol vessel.

This confrontation took place as foreign ministers from Southeast Asia gathered in Manila for talks, where maritime tensions were anticipated to be a significant point of discussion. According to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the Second Thomas Shoal falls within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. Manila has urged Beijing to adhere to a 2016 international arbitration ruling that affirmed its maritime rights, a ruling China did not participate in.

The U.S. State Department condemned China's actions as "dangerous and aggressive," stating that China's "troubling pattern of provocation" undermines regional peace and stability and contradicts its promises to resolve disputes peacefully.
