China confirms President Noboa's state visit to strengthen bilateral ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to host Ecuador's President Daniel Noboa for a state visit from August 16 to 23, signaling a commitment to bolster the strategic partnership between the two nations. The visit, initiated by Xi, aims to deepen political and economic ties, with Noboa scheduled to meet with Xi and other senior Chinese officials.

China views Ecuador as a significant Latin American partner, highlighting the "comprehensive strategic partnership" that has strengthened in recent years. The discussions will likely focus on two key areas: China's Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure projects and the free trade agreement that came into effect in May 2024. Ecuador joined the Belt and Road Initiative in 2018.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Roberto Kury has indicated that Quito aims to attract Chinese investment in the energy and mining sectors. Simultaneously, Ecuador seeks to expand its exports to China and address specific trade issues, such as recent restrictions imposed on Ecuadorian shrimp exporters.

Further agenda items include discussions on Ecuador's debt with the Eximbank and the operational aspects of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant, which was formally handed over to Ecuador by Chinese state firm Sinohydro in April. The free trade agreement, in force since May 2024, is considered a cornerstone of the bilateral economic relationship.
