China Halts Tibet Rescue Operations Amid Flood Threat

Rescue operations in Tibet have been suspended due to the imminent threat of further flooding, following a catastrophic mudslide that has left hundreds missing. China's state television, CCTV, reported that a lake formed by the accumulated debris from the mudslide has begun to overflow.

This overflow poses a significant risk to the areas where rescue teams were operating. Consequently, all rescue teams have been instructed to remain in place and await further directives. Teams that had already reached the affected area were ordered to retreat by at least a kilometer.

The disaster, which struck the Nepal-Tibet border region, has claimed at least 469 lives, with over 1,400 people still unaccounted for. Among the missing are hundreds of foreign nationals. Chinese state media confirmed three deaths initially, bringing the total confirmed fatalities to at least 472.

In addition to the rescue efforts, Chinese state media also reported that rescue workers had evacuated 555 stranded tourists from Tibet. The exact nationalities of these tourists were not specified. The situation remains precarious as authorities assess the risks associated with the overflowing debris lake and the potential for further devastation.
