China pledges extra US$14.7 million in earthquake relief to Venezuela

China is stepping up its support for Venezuela by pledging an additional 100 million yuan (US$14.7 million) in relief items following two devastating earthquakes last week. The quakes claimed at least 1,450 lives, including eight Chinese citizens.

Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, announced the decision on Monday, stating that Beijing's contribution will consist of urgently needed relief items, supplementing the cash aid previously extended. China has also provided crucial satellite imagery of the affected regions to assist Venezuela's ongoing relief operations.

Beyond governmental aid, Chinese enterprises and overseas Chinese communities based in Venezuela have actively contributed. They have donated essential engineering machinery and medical supplies, and formed rescue teams to participate directly in search-and-rescue missions. Guo emphasized China's readiness to offer further assistance based on the evolving needs of the disaster situation.

Earlier, the China International Development Cooperation Agency had announced unspecified cash aid on Friday. That same day, Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed a message of condolence to Venezuela's interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, expressing solidarity in the wake of the tragedy.
