China's Huawei signs Wi-Fi patent license deal with US firm HP

Chinese technology firm Huawei announced Wednesday it has entered into a global, multi-year cross-licensing patent agreement with American company HP. The pact grants HP, headquartered in Palo Alto, California, the right to use specific Huawei patents related to Wi-Fi technology in its range of computers and peripheral devices. In return, Huawei will gain access to certain patents held by the U.S. tech giant.

This agreement comes at a time when Huawei faces significant restrictions from the United States, which have limited its access to American semiconductors and technologies since 2019. Despite these challenges, Huawei has continued to forge intellectual property partnerships with U.S. companies, including a similar multi-year deal with Amazon in 2024.

HP was the world's second-largest personal computer manufacturer in 2025, behind Lenovo, selling approximately 270.2 million units. Huawei, a major player in patent licensing, reported revenues of around $630 million from patent licenses in 2024. The company stated that it has entered into over 260 patent licensing agreements and participates in patent pools, having secured more than 165,000 active patents worldwide. Huawei also significantly invests in research and development, dedicating approximately $27.5 billion in 2025, representing 21.8% of its annual revenue.
