China's lunar research station could be guarded by robot watchdogs, space scientists say

Robot dogs could become the future guardians of China's lunar research stations, patrolling the surface, identifying hazards, and assisting astronauts in the search for scientifically valuable rocks. This concept is detailed in a blueprint by researchers from the China Academy of Space Technology, the nation's primary spacecraft developer.

The envisioned scenario involves a team of three astronauts collaborating with intelligent machines. As the crew ventures onto the lunar surface, one astronaut would command two robot dogs, while a second astronaut focuses on collecting rock samples and conducting detailed scientific work. A third astronaut would remain within a pressurized rover, coordinating the mission and remotely operating other robots as needed.

According to the scientists, China is expanding its human spaceflight endeavors beyond Earth orbit to the moon. They suggest that future lunar exploration will rely on a combination of astronaut-led decision-making and autonomous robots performing tasks. The researchers published their findings in the journal Chinese Space Science and Technology in July, emphasizing that robots will be crucial for extracting lunar resources and preparing the moon for long-term human settlement.

These robots are expected to undertake a variety of tasks, including harvesting water ice, mining minerals, converting lava tubes into habitats, and constructing structures using local materials. Beyond resource management and construction, they will handle routine duties like daily patrols, inspections, environmental regulation, cleaning, tending to plants, and preparing meals. The robots are also designed to interact with astronauts, offering companionship and helping to alleviate the psychological strain associated with living in an isolated environment.
