China to send astronaut on year-long space mission as it eyes 2030 moon landing

China is preparing to launch an astronaut on a record-breaking year-long mission to its space station, signaling a significant step in its ambitious space program. The Shenzhou-23 spacecraft is scheduled to lift off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, carrying three astronauts.

The primary objective of this extended mission is to conduct in-depth research into human physiology during long-duration spaceflight. Understanding these effects is crucial for planning future deep-space explorations, including China's goal of landing astronauts on the moon by 2030.

Among the crew members is Li Jiaying, a former Hong Kong police inspector, who will be the first astronaut from the city to participate in a Chinese space mission.
