Chinese Cinema Offers Midday Nap Service

A cinema in northwest China is turning the lunch break into nap time. Lumiai Cinema in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, offers workers a place to sleep from noon to 2:30 p.m. on weekdays, using seats that recline fully flat.

The service operates in two special screening halls with 76 adjustable seats. A monthly pass costs 39.9 yuan for one person and 59.9 yuan for two. Blankets, coffee and other drinks are free, while disposable earplugs and eye masks cost 5.9 yuan each.

The cinema’s manager, who gave only the surname Xu, said the initiative was designed to raise the use of screening halls, which is usually low on working days. Customers must silence their phones and keep their shoes on in the sleeping area to protect other customers’ comfort.

One hall, the Leisure Screening Hall, has wider seats and is the more popular option. The Massage Seat Hall offers massage chairs. Staff politely warn customers who snore and direct them to the less crowded massage-seat hall.
