Chinese envoy advocates Mandarin teaching in Nigerian schools

Yan Yuqing, the Consul-General of China in Lagos, has called for the expansion of Mandarin language education within Nigerian schools. Her remarks came during a visit to Grace Schools in Lagos, where she observed students participating in Mandarin classes as part of the school's foreign language curriculum.

I am happy to visit Grace School. I can see that many Nigerian students like the Chinese language, culture, history and people. Children are the hope of every nation, and I am glad to hear many of them say they dream of visiting China.

Yuqing noted that China already provides support for Mandarin education in Nigeria through initiatives like the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos and dedicated Chinese language classrooms in various primary and secondary schools. "I am happy to visit Grace School. I can see that many Nigerian students like the Chinese language, culture, history and people," she said, expressing her pleasure at the students' enthusiasm.

The Consul-General commended the pupils for their proficiency in Mandarin and expressed optimism about increased academic and professional opportunities for Nigerians in China. She stated, "I’m happy that the children are learning Chinese well. I love Nigeria. We have similar attire, and I enjoy moi moi, jollof rice and egusi." She believes that greater educational and cultural exchanges will significantly strengthen the relationship between China and Nigeria.

Yuqing highlighted that 2026 has been designated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange, with education and cultural cooperation playing a central role. China plans to continue offering scholarships, exchange programs for teachers and students, and educational donations to foster mutual understanding. She also mentioned ongoing Chinese support for Nigeria's development, including food assistance, healthcare interventions, and infrastructure projects. Grace Schools began teaching Mandarin 16 years ago, recognizing China's growing economic influence and the opportunities it presents for young Nigerians.
