Church reaffirms independence while respecting traditional structures

The Methodist Church in Fiji has affirmed its commitment to maintaining its identity and authority as a Christian institution, even as it continues to respect and collaborate with traditional Fijian structures, known as the vanua. Church President Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou addressed this balance at the Methodist Church Conference 2026.

Reverend Turagavou described the relationship between the church and the vanua as a vital component of Fiji's cultural and religious heritage. He emphasized that this relationship must be built on mutual respect and genuine partnership. However, he cautioned against the church becoming so intertwined with traditional institutions that it compromises its distinct voice and mission.

"The church must not become so closely tied to traditional structures that it loses its own voice," Reverend Turagavou stated, reminding attendees that the church's primary allegiance lies with Jesus Christ. This message comes as the church gears up for its 2027-2028 theme, the "Year of Liberation and Reformation."

The upcoming theme signals a period of introspection and change for the church. Leadership indicates that this reform process will involve a thorough examination of the church's structures, practices, and relationships. The goal is not to sever ties with traditional institutions but to foster a dynamic where both the church and the vanua are respected, with their respective roles clearly defined and honored. This approach aligns with Fiji's broader economic and urban development trends, seeking a harmonious integration of tradition and progress.
