Ciprian Ciucu: Bucharest prepares its largest electric public transport investment in years

Bucharest is preparing what the city administration calls its largest investment in electric public transport in recent years: 100 articulated trolleybuses and 79 new trams.

Mayor General Ciprian Ciucu said the tender for the trolleybuses had already been launched. Companies have until 3 p.m. on October 5, 2026, to submit offers. The total investment is valued at 2.2 billion lei, including more than 553 million lei in non-reimbursable funding secured at the end of last year.

We are preparing the largest investment in electric public transport in Bucharest in recent years: 100 trolleybuses and 79 trams. New, modern, non-polluting and comfortable for passengers.

The planned trolleybuses will measure 18 meters and carry at least 130 passengers. They will have fully low floors, air conditioning, ramps for people with reduced mobility, audio and video passenger information systems, surveillance cameras, passenger-counting equipment, contactless validators and USB charging ports.

Their batteries will allow them to travel at least 20 kilometers without power from the electric network. City authorities say that capability will make it easier to extend routes into areas without overhead contact infrastructure. The vehicles will also come with a full warranty of at least five years covering the trolleybuses and their main components.
