Transelectrica secures more than 351 million lei to modernize Romania’s power grid

Romania’s electricity transmission operator, Transelectrica, has secured more than 351 million lei in modernization funding from the country’s Modernization Fund.

The company signed two agreements with the Energy Ministry on August 28, covering projects designed to improve the safety and efficiency of the national transmission network and increase its ability to integrate renewable power.

The larger project, worth 253.49 million lei, will improve voltage regulation at the Gutinaș substation. The second project has funding of 97.65 million lei, excluding VAT, or about 18.6 million euros. It will expand Transelectrica’s DigiTEL Smart Lines online monitoring system.

The smart-lines project will install monitoring systems on 27 overhead electricity lines across Romania. The systems will track the technical condition of the lines in real time and help optimize their transmission capacity. The project also includes the rollout of Dynamic Line Rating, which adjusts the usable capacity of overhead lines according to weather conditions.

Transelectrica said the technology will provide the system operator with more precise, real-time information, helping reduce risks and improve the reliability and efficiency of the lines. The project forms part of the Transmission Grid Development Plan for 2026-2035.
