Clan del Golfo Kidnaps Community Leader, Three Youths in Anorí, Antioquia

A severe public order crisis has erupted in the northeastern Antioquia region of Colombia following the alleged kidnapping of four individuals, including a community leader, by armed groups. Governor Andrés Julián Rendón issued an urgent appeal on August 29, denouncing the abduction of the president of the Communal Action Board and three young men from the Liberia district in Anorí. He stated that structures of the 'Clan del Golfo' are suspected of carrying out the crime.

Governor Rendón described the situation in the rural area as critical, attributing it to territorial disputes over illicit economies. He emphasized the urgent need for the National Army to establish effective control over the region's river corridors, particularly the Nechí River. These waterways are reportedly used by criminal groups for movement and illicit activities, including illegal mining and drug trafficking. The governor noted that the Antioquia administration has already provided the Army's Seventh Division with river patrol units, acquired through security taxes, to monitor the Nechí River.

Directing his message to the national government, Rendón stressed that a definitive solution requires a robust and sustained military and police deployment. He called for the presence of the Army, Navy, and Police to protect the civilian population, which he described as confined and subjected to violence. The governor's plea underscores the ongoing challenges in maintaining security and combating organized crime in remote areas of Colombia, where criminal groups exploit resource-rich territories and threaten the safety of local communities.
