Clara Tauson collapses in early US Open exit

Clara Tauson’s difficult 2026 season worsened at the US Open when a strong start against Sloane Stephens turned into a one-sided first-round defeat.

Tauson, the higher-ranked player and a relatively strong favorite, led 4-2 and had four break points to move to 5-2. Stephens saved all four chances, then broke back to level the opening set at 4-4. The American took control and won the set 6-4 when Tauson sent a forehand wide.

The collapse continued in the second set. Tauson struggled for confidence and made repeated errors, shouting, “I can’t do anything,” in frustration as Stephens moved ahead 4-0. Tauson avoided a second-set bagel by saving match points at 0-5, but Stephens served out the match in the following game.

Stephens entered the tournament as the world number 209 on a wildcard. The 2017 US Open champion and former world number three still produced the powerful forehand that troubled Tauson, who had been effective when she took the initiative in rallies.

The defeat was Tauson’s third consecutive one-match Grand Slam appearance. She began the year pushing toward the top 10 but now ranks 38th after injuries and inconsistent form. Asian tournaments in the autumn offer her final opportunities to repair a difficult season.
