Clara Tauson Opens American Season with Defeat in Washington

Danish tennis star Clara Tauson began her North American hardcourt season with a first-round defeat at the Washington Open, falling to Italy's Elisabetta Cocciaretto. Tauson, ranked 30th in the world, was considered the favorite against Cocciaretto, ranked 71st, but ultimately lost the match 6-4, 6-7, 6-7 after more than three hours of play.

The match saw Tauson start strongly, breaking Cocciaretto's serve in the first game and taking the first set 6-4. However, the momentum shifted in the second set. Despite an early break, Tauson began making more errors, and Cocciaretto fought back, eventually forcing a tiebreak which she won. The Italian player carried this momentum into the third set, breaking Tauson early on.

Although Tauson managed to break back and stay in contention, she was broken again and faced a tough tiebreak. Ultimately, fatigue seemed to set in for Tauson, who made numerous errors in the final tiebreak, losing it 2-7 and with it the match. This early exit in Washington is a significant setback as Tauson aims to build momentum for upcoming WTA 1000 events and the US Open later in August.
