Pirlo Not to Become National Coach After Russian Connection Controversy

Andrea Pirlo has withdrawn his name from consideration for the Italian national football team's coaching position, citing criticism surrounding his collaboration with the Russian betting firm Fonbet. Pirlo, who has served as an ambassador for Fonbet since October, stated that he received the news on Sunday and has followed the debate with "great bitterness."

The former Italian international's connection to the betting company had reportedly drawn criticism internally within the Italian Football Federation. Pirlo is currently coaching United FC in Dubai.

Italy has been without a permanent head coach since Gennaro Gattuso resigned in April following the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup. This marks the third consecutive World Cup absence for the four-time champions.

Several high-profile names have been linked to the coaching role. Italian Football Federation President Giovanni Malagò confirmed last week that the federation had met with Pep Guardiola to discuss the possibility of him taking the job. Malagò indicated a willingness to exceed the budgeted salary if Guardiola could be secured.
