Cleaning worker discovers son among crash victims he stopped to help

A tragic coincidence unfolded at an accident scene in Serik, Antalya, where a municipal cleaning worker, Cevdet Durmaz, stopped to assist victims, only to discover the deceased driver was his own son.

I went up to him. When I saw my son, I threw myself on the ground.

The collision occurred early Saturday morning when an oncoming car collided with Taner Durmaz's vehicle as it was turning. The impact left both vehicles severely damaged. Emergency services, including health, police, and fire departments, were dispatched to the scene. Taner Durmaz, an employee of the Serik Municipality's Parks and Gardens Department, and his passenger, musician Mustafa Meke, 36, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Cevdet Durmaz was on his way to a work site when he saw the accident and stopped to help. Upon approaching the wreckage, he was informed that the driver of one of the cars was his son. Overcome with grief, he collapsed at the scene. "I went up to him. When I saw my son, I threw myself on the ground," he recounted. He expressed his devastation but also his resolve to care for his son's two children, stating, "I will do not only grandfatherhood but also fatherhood for them for as long as I live."

Three individuals from the other vehicle, including its foreign national driver, S.B.U., were taken to the hospital. Security camera footage captured the moment of the collision. The foreign national driver, S.B.U., has since been arrested by judicial order.
