Coliform Bacteria Found in Drinking Water in Parts of Märkisch-Oderland, Germany

Residents in several towns within the Märkisch-Oderland district of Germany have been advised to boil their drinking water following the discovery of coliform bacteria. The affected areas include Golzow, Küstrin-Kietz, and Alt and Neu Tucheband, located near the Polish border.

While the presence of coliform bacteria does not automatically indicate the presence of pathogens, it serves as an indicator of potential microbiological contamination. These bacteria can cause gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea. To safeguard public health, the district's health department recommends that all tap water be boiled before drinking, preparing food, brushing teeth, cleaning open wounds, or any other use involving mucous membranes.

Coliform bacteria do not necessarily mean that pathogens are present in the drinking water, but they do indicate a possible microbiological impairment.

Special precautions are advised for vulnerable populations. Elderly citizens, infants, children, and pregnant women are advised against showering. The exact cause of the bacterial detection is currently under investigation by authorities.

In response to the contamination, the local water supplier has initiated extensive network flushing measures to address the issue. The district is working to identify the source of the contamination and restore the water supply to safe standards.
