Colombia and U.S. Agree on Joint Military Operations Against Drug Smugglers

Colombia has officially approved joint military operations against drug smugglers in collaboration with the United States, announced U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. This agreement marks a significant step in the bilateral fight against illicit drug trade.

"These kinds of powerful and concrete actions are examples of the type of active engagement that we want to see from our partners," Hegseth stated. His remarks come in the context of U.S. anti-narcotics operations in the Caribbean and Pacific Seas, which have resulted in the deaths of 215 individuals suspected of drug smuggling since September of the previous year. These operations have drawn criticism from human rights organizations, which have questioned the evidence presented by the U.S. for its claims.

Furthermore, Colombia is poised to become the 19th member of a coalition dedicated to combating cartels. This development aligns with the agenda of the newly elected president, Abelardo de la Espriella, who is known for his strong stance against cartels and drug trafficking. He had previously indicated openness to the presence of U.S. troops in Colombia.

The collaboration aims to intensify efforts against drug smuggling networks that operate in and through Colombian territory, leveraging combined military capabilities and intelligence sharing. The approval of joint operations signifies a deepening of the security partnership between the two nations.
