Colombia earthquake: 181 dead, 195 missing as nation mourns

Colombia is grappling with the aftermath of a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck on August 10, 2026, leaving a devastating trail of destruction across several departments, including Chocó, Antioquia, Quindío, Risaralda, and Valle del Cauca.

More than 48 hours after the seismic event, the official toll stands at 181 fatalities, 2,595 individuals injured, and 195 people reported missing. The national government, led by President Abelardo De La Espriella, has declared three days of national mourning for the victims.

The earthquake's impact extends to infrastructure, with 1,136 homes completely destroyed and an additional 8,357 damaged. Eighty-five health centers, 807 educational facilities, 74 roads, and 16 aqueducts have also been affected. One airport's runway sustained damage, disrupting transportation.
