Colombia earthquake toll rises to 265 dead, over 53,000 affected

The devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Colombia has claimed the lives of 265 people, with thousands more injured or missing. President Abelardo de la Espriella reported that 3,494 individuals sustained injuries, and emergency brigades are actively searching for 496 reported missing persons amidst the rescue operations.

The seismic event's impact is widespread, affecting over 53,000 people across 403 municipalities in 14 departments. Residential and institutional infrastructure has been severely damaged, with initial reports confirming the complete destruction of 11,347 homes. An additional 53,526 residential buildings suffered severe or moderate damage, and 140 buildings have collapsed entirely.

Beyond housing, the earthquake has disrupted essential social and community services. Reports indicate that 1,819 educational centers, 631 community spaces, and 179 medical and hospital facilities sustained damage. The country's public services, transportation networks, and financial sector have also experienced significant interruptions. Teams are working to clear roadways and restore basic services to affected communities.
