Colombia marks first anniversary of senator's assassination with memorial masses

Colombia remembered Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay on the first anniversary of his death, August 11, 2025, with memorial masses and public tributes. Turbay, who was 39, died after being critically injured in a targeted assassination on June 7, 2025, during his presidential campaign.

His widow, María Claudia Tarazona, organized a mass at the Bogotá Metropolitan Cathedral, where she spoke of transforming her grief into a life of love, goodness, and the absence of hatred. She recalled the 65 days spent by her husband's side at the Santa Fe de Bogotá Foundation.

Senator Turbay's father, Miguel Uribe Londoño, also held a mass and announced that a monument would be unveiled in his honor at the site of the shooting. He remembered his son's ideas, principles, bravery, and an indelible legacy.

President Abelardo de la Espriella, while visiting areas affected by a recent earthquake, paid tribute to Turbay, a member of the right-wing Centro Democrático party. He acknowledged Turbay's passion for Colombia and his strong defense of democracy. Turbay, the grandson of former liberal President Julio César Turbay Ayala, became a symbol of the political violence that has plagued Colombia, particularly during the recent election campaign.
