Colombia's Vice President-elect heads to U.S. for economic agenda

Colombia's Vice President-elect José Manuel Restrepo has embarked on a crucial economic mission to Washington, accompanied by a team of designated ministers. The trip aims to strengthen ties between Colombia and the United States by engaging with key American institutions and presenting the incoming government's financial agenda.

The delegation's itinerary includes a significant appearance at a U.S. Congressional hearing, organized by Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, titled 'A New Beginning for Colombia.' Here, they are expected to outline the primary challenges and objectives of the administration led by President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella, who is set to assume office on August 7.

Furthermore, the Colombian representatives will participate in an economic forum hosted by the Atlantic Council, a prominent think tank specializing in international relations. This platform will provide an opportunity to discuss the financial priorities of the new government, which has pledged a drastic fiscal adjustment and a reduction in the size of the state, alongside efforts to revive oil and gas production.

Restrepo, who previously served as Minister of Commerce and Finance under Iván Duque, expressed his commitment to the mission, sharing a video on social media with the caption, "Our path begins for the mission of the miracle homeland in the United States." The delegation's visit underscores the importance placed on international economic relations for the incoming administration, particularly in addressing concerns over Colombia's rising national debt and the weakening of foreign direct investment.
