Colombian goalkeeper Montero moves from Vélez to Boca Juniors

Boca Juniors has announced the upcoming signing of Colombian national team goalkeeper Álvaro Montero, who will transfer from Vélez Sarsfield. The 31-year-old shot-stopper is expected to arrive in Argentina on Monday night and undergo his medical examinations on Tuesday, with the deal contingent on no unforeseen issues arising.

Montero was a member of the Colombian squad that reached the round of 16 at the 2026 North American World Cup, although he did not feature in any matches during the tournament. His previous clubs include Millonarios, Deportes Tolima, and Cúcuta Deportivo in his native Colombia, as well as San Lorenzo de Almagro and São Caetano in Brazil.

At Boca Juniors, Montero will contend for the starting goalkeeper position with Leandro Brey. The club is also awaiting the return of Agustín Marchesín, who is sidelined with a serious knee injury and is not expected back until next year. Montero will aim to emulate the success of another renowned Colombian goalkeeper, Óscar Córdoba, who enjoyed a trophy-laden spell with Boca Juniors between 1997 and 2001, winning multiple titles including two Copa Libertadores and an Intercontinental Cup.
