Colón records fourth dengue death, accounts for 25% of national cases

The province of Colón has confirmed a fourth fatality attributed to dengue, according to the Ministry of Health (Minsa). The deceased is an approximately 55-year-old individual who suffered from comorbidities that complicated their condition.

Colón now represents a significant portion of the national dengue burden, accounting for about 25% of the country's cases. The province has recorded 1,706 positive dengue infections to date. The areas with the highest incidence are Puerto Pilón, Cristóbal Este, Sabanitas, Cativá, and Buena Vista, where surveillance and prevention activities are ongoing.

Health authorities are reiterating their call for the public to strengthen preventive measures, emphasizing the critical need to eliminate breeding grounds for the dengue-transmitting mosquito. Regional Health Director Dr. Abraham Alvarado explained that symptoms can vary, but individuals should seek medical attention if they experience warning signs such as vomiting, abdominal pain, or mild bleeding.

Alvarado cautioned that severe cases can progress rapidly, leading to life-threatening complications like massive bleeding, a significant drop in platelet count, and shock. Prompt medical attention is therefore crucial. The Minsa is planning new fumigation actions, including nebulization campaigns scheduled for September 4-6, with interregional support to reduce the mosquito population.

Authorities stress that prevention is a shared responsibility. They urge the population to eliminate water-collecting containers and objects, maintain clean yards, and remove any potential mosquito breeding sites. The Ministry of Health is also preparing for fumigation efforts, including nebulization campaigns.
