Comment: Inter showed HJK how to build a winning team with a cup victory

Inter Turku showed HJK that financial superiority does not automatically become superiority on the pitch. A 1-0 victory in the Finnish Cup final, secured by Alie Conteh’s goal, gave Inter the third Finnish Cup title in its history.

The final began dramatically. Play stopped in the ninth minute for about 40 minutes after two simultaneous medical emergencies occurred in HJK’s supporters’ end. The people who suffered the incidents were taken by ambulance for further treatment.

Before the interruption, Inter controlled possession and dictated the match. HJK returned more actively after the long pause, pushed attacks deep into Inter’s area and moved the focus of the game closer to the Turku side’s goal. The Helsinki club also managed to restrict Inter’s attacking play.

That pressure brought no reward. In the final minute of first-half stoppage time, Inter’s new signing Herman Sjögrell produced an excellent pass behind HJK’s defensive line. Conteh escaped behind Mihailo Bogićević, controlled the ball with his chest and calmly put Inter ahead.

The pattern continued after the break. HJK actively searched for an equalizer, with Teemu Pukki finding three early shooting opportunities and midfielder Mouhamed Guèye coming close as well. But possession and promising attacks did not produce a goal. A second interruption came in the 80th minute, when pyrotechnic flares were thrown onto the field from HJK’s supporters’ end.

Inter kept its composure in the closing stages. The Turku players managed the clock, while Conteh used his experience in attack to keep the ball away from HJK and protect the lead.

For HJK, the final exposed an uncomfortable truth. The club has invested heavily this season, reporting the Veikkausliiga’s largest player budget at €2.6 million. It has also changed its head coach and strengthened its recruitment organization within the past year. Yet the team’s quality and results have fallen strikingly short of that investment. Inter, the article argues, has shown that a better-organized, faster team can be built with fewer resources.
