Commonwealth Games: Enekwechi wins historic shot put gold for Nigeria

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history on Thursday, becoming the first Nigerian to claim the men's shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He achieved this feat with a championship-winning throw of 21.07 meters in Glasgow, Scotland.

The 33-year-old athlete delivered his decisive throw on his second-to-last attempt at Scotstoun Stadium. This victory marked a significant personal achievement, surpassing the silver medal he won in 2018 and overcoming his fourth-place finish in 2022.

Enekwechi's performance dethroned the defending champion, Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who had initially led the competition with a throw of 21.03 meters. England's Scott Lincoln secured the bronze medal with a throw of 20.99 meters.

This historic gold medal increased Nigeria's total medal count at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to 15, comprising eight gold, five silver, and two bronze medals. Enekwechi, also the African record holder, had previously signaled his strong performance by topping his qualification group on Wednesday.
