Commonwealth Games: Enekwechi Wins Nigeria's Eighth Gold Medal; Amusan Denied Third Consecutive Title

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi secured Nigeria's eighth gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, triumphing in the Men's Shot Put with a championship-winning throw of 21.07 meters. This victory marks Enekwechi's first gold in three editions of the Games, serving as compensation for his silver medal in 2018 and fourth-place finish in 2022.

His throw narrowly surpassed that of defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who took silver with 21.03m, while Enekwechi's friend and rival Scott Lincoln of England claimed the bronze with 20.99m.

In contrast, Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record holder in the women's 100m hurdles, had a disappointing outing. Despite her dominance in the event, Amusan finished with a bronze medal, clocking 12.60 seconds. She struggled with a poor start and ran with toe pain, though she declined to use it as an excuse.

Bahamas' Devynne Charlton won the gold in 12.33 seconds, followed by Jamaica's Megan Simmonds in second place with 12.41 seconds. Amusan's bid to become the first sprint hurdler to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games titles was unsuccessful.

Elsewhere, Ella Onojuvwevwo advanced to the women's 400m final, while Udodi Onwuzurike qualified for the men's 200m final. However, other Nigerian athletes like Jennifer Chukwuka and Olayinka Olajide did not make it to the women's 200m final. Obiageri Pamela Amaechi placed sixth in the women's Discuss Throw, and Unyima Uwak did not place in the Women's Triple Jump.
