Commonwealth Games Eyes India Boost After Glasgow Edition

The 23rd Commonwealth Games drew to a close in Glasgow with a vibrant closing ceremony, marking a transition of focus towards India, which is set to host the 2030 edition. This quadrennial event, primarily for nations of the former British Empire, has been grappling with maintaining its relevance in the modern sporting landscape and has faced significant hosting hurdles.

Recent editions have seen hosts withdraw due to the substantial costs associated with organizing a multi-sport extravaganza. The scaled-down version in Glasgow, featuring 10 sports compared to the usual 17-20, was made possible by financial compensation from the Australian state of Victoria, which had pulled out of hosting in 2023, and support from the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).

The upcoming centenary Games in Ahmedabad, India, are anticipated to restore stability to the hosting process, which was disrupted by Durban's withdrawal for the 2022 Games and subsequent replacement by Birmingham. Katie Sadleir, chief executive of Commonwealth Sport, has promised an "exciting and dynamic" event in Ahmedabad with 15 to 17 sports. Harsh Sanghavi, the deputy chief minister of Gujarat, described hosting the Games as a "significant milestone" for India.

He views the Commonwealth Games as a crucial opportunity for India to demonstrate its capability in delivering world-class sporting events. While Glasgow featured elite athletes like Josh Kerr and Chad le Clos, the Commonwealth Games are increasingly seen as a platform for emerging talent rather than a mandatory event for top-tier international stars, with some Olympic champions opting out.

We have created a belief among 74 nations that every single nation could and should host the Commonwealth Games.

Despite the challenges, the Games have seen successful innovations, including the full integration of para-events. Glasgow's ability to stage the event with a short lead-in time and a significantly lower budget demonstrated that Commonwealth Games do not need to adhere to a single, costly model. Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, emphasized that the event fosters belief among participating nations that hosting is achievable, advocating for each host nation to celebrate its unique identity and infrastructure.
