Commonwealth Games: World Record Holder Tobi Amusan Takes Bronze in 100m Hurdles

Nigeria's Tobi Amusan, the reigning world record holder in the women's 100m hurdles, claimed the bronze medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Amusan, widely considered a favorite, crossed the finish line in 12.60 seconds, trailing behind the Bahamas' Devynne Charlton, who won gold with a time of 12.33 seconds, and Jamaica's Megan Tapper, who secured silver in 12.41 seconds.

While Amusan aimed to defend her Commonwealth title, the bronze medal still represents a significant achievement and contributes to Team Nigeria's expanding medal count at the Games. This result followed a strong performance in the heats, where she clocked a wind-assisted 12.19 seconds. Although the +3.8 m/s tailwind prevented this time from being an official record, it was the fastest ever recorded in a Commonwealth Games women's 100m hurdles race, signaling her formidable presence.

The final, however, proved to be a highly competitive event. Charlton delivered a championship-winning performance, and Tapper also finished ahead of the Nigerian athlete. Amusan has a consistent history of success on the global stage, solidifying her status as one of Nigeria's most decorated athletes. Her accolades include medals from the World Championships, Commonwealth Games, African Championships, African Games, and Diamond League meetings.

Amusan's latest medal comes shortly after other notable performances from Team Nigeria. Chukwuebuka Enekwechi won gold in the men's shot put, Goodness Nwachukwu broke her own world record en route to discus gold, and Kayinsola Ajayi earned a bronze in the men's 100m, ending a 20-year medal drought for Nigeria in that event at the Commonwealth Games.
