Community mental health support strengthened

Lithuania is set to strengthen its community-based mental health services following the Ministry of Health's approval of new regulatory amendments. These changes are designed to make intensive mental health support more accessible to a greater number of people, particularly those facing severe mental and behavioral challenges.

The new regulations will facilitate better organization and delivery of care. A key component is the establishment of 16 community mental health teams that will operate across the country. Each team will comprise a psychiatrist, psychologist, nurses, and a social worker. Collectively, these teams will have the capacity to provide intensive support to around 2,700 individuals at any given time.

Currently, Lithuania has three such teams operational. The expansion aims to bridge the gap in services, ensuring that individuals who require more than standard care can receive it effectively. Assistance can be provided in the person's home, at a facility, or remotely, offering flexibility and tailored support.

This initiative targets individuals with severe mental and behavioral disorders for whom existing services may be insufficient. The goal is to ensure that these individuals receive the necessary intensive care within their communities, promoting better outcomes and integration. The program is a significant step towards a more robust and accessible mental healthcare system in Lithuania.
