Complaint Filed Against Joint Investigation Team Over Jeon Jae-soo Bribery Case Decision

A legal challenge has emerged concerning the joint investigation team's decision to clear National Assembly member Jeon Jae-soo of bribery allegations. The complaint, filed by former Seoul City Council member Lee Jong-bae, accuses the team's leader, Kim Tae-hoon, and others of distorting the law and dereliction of duty. This development injects a new layer of scrutiny into a case that has already drawn significant public attention.

The allegations against Jeon, a Busan mayoral candidate for the Democratic Party, center on claims that he received valuable items, including a watch, from the Unification Church in 2018. While the joint investigation team identified the dates when the gifts were allegedly exchanged, they concluded that the statute of limitations had passed for these offenses. Furthermore, they stated that beyond witness testimony, there was insufficient evidence to corroborate the delivery of cash alongside the watch.

Lee Jong-bae, the complainant, argues that the investigation team failed to properly apply relevant laws, leading to an unjust "no indictment" decision. He formally lodged his complaint with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which has since been assigned to the Dongdaemun Police Station. The police are reportedly considering transferring the case to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials (CIO), given the nature of the allegations and the individuals involved. This case highlights the complex interplay between political figures, religious organizations, and the legal system in South Korea, with the public keenly watching how these allegations will be addressed.
