Comptroller opens investigation into Minister Duco over alleged misuse of official car

Chilean Minister of Sport Natalia Duco is facing a new inquiry from the Comptroller General's office regarding the alleged improper use of a state-owned vehicle. The investigation stems from a complaint filed by an individual outside the Ministry of Sport, accusing Duco of utilizing public resources for a private social event on April 23.

The complaint, as reported by La Tercera, includes allegations that Duco attended a private celebration using official means, with photographic evidence purportedly showing the minister at the event. The report also mentioned that the driver of the vehicle waited at a terrace, equipped with a blanket, suggesting the vehicle was used for personal convenience rather than official duties.

Beyond the vehicle usage, the complaint also scrutinizes Duco's acceptance and subsequent resignation from a Proddar scholarship. The accuser contends that Duco should have relinquished the scholarship earlier, ideally upon being nominated as a future minister in early January, rather than in February. The Comptroller's office has requested a report from the ministry, a standard procedure when such complaints are formally lodged.

This administrative investigation adds to a series of controversies that have marked Duco's five-month tenure as minister. Her previous actions, including prioritizing "pretty clothes for athletes," advancing support plans for rodeo, questioning Chile's 2036 Olympic bid, canceling national games, and her involvement in the controversy surrounding the National Stadium's use for BTS concerts, have previously drawn public attention and criticism.
