Conforto homers, Hoerner gets three hits as Cubs beat Marlins 6-5

Michael Conforto hit a home run and a single, Nico Hoerner collected three hits, and the Chicago Cubs held off the Miami Marlins 6-5 on Saturday.

The Cubs finished with 13 hits. Michael Busch and Panama’s Miguel Amaya each added a double and a single, while Pete Crow-Armstrong had a single, a walk and an RBI. Ian Happ contributed two hits and two RBIs.

Chicago built a 3-0 lead in the third inning against Miami starter Ryan Gusto. Conforto hit a solo homer, and Happ followed with a two-run single. Busch added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-4.

The Marlins answered with home runs from Griffin Conine and Kyle Stowers. Conine’s blast off Caleb Thielbar brought Miami within one in the fifth, and Stowers’ solo shot in the seventh made it 6-5.

Ryan Rolison retired the final out of the seventh and the first batter of the eighth to earn the win. Ryan Zeferjahn worked the final 1 2/3 innings for his fifth save. In the ninth, a called third strike against Conine on a 3-2 count with two outs was overturned after an ABS review, but Zeferjahn then retired Dominican infielder Otto López on a fly ball to right.

Chicago starter Javier Assad, recalled from Triple-A on Saturday, allowed three runs and three hits over 4 2/3 innings. He walked five and struck out three.
