Congo Airways grounded: National airline faces multiple operational and financial challenges

Congo Airways, once envisioned as a symbol of the Democratic Republic of Congo's air sovereignty, is in a state of crisis, with its entire fleet grounded. The airline, established in 2015 with four aircraft, now finds itself unable to conduct commercial flights. Its Embraer E-190, financed by the national social security fund, remains idle due to a lack of qualified pilots, essential technical documentation, and necessary spare parts. This operational paralysis extends to the airline's other aircraft, primarily due to maintenance issues. Compounding these problems are significant financial woes, including substantial debts and unpaid salaries, as reported by employees. An official inquiry has also highlighted severe administrative and financial mismanagement, posing risks to the state. In response to this dire situation, President Félix Tshisekedi mandated a "realistic and rigorously supervised" recovery plan and a governance overhaul in March 2026. Despite these hurdles, Congo Airways has initiated efforts to revive its operations, including a January 2026 recruitment drive for pilots and technicians specifically for the Embraer E-190. The airline's CEO expressed confidence in a swift resumption of flights, contingent on resolving the complex operational, technical, and financial obstacles.
