The Democratic Republic of Congo is grappling with a severe Ebola outbreak, which has now claimed the lives of 131 individuals out of 513 suspected cases. The gravity of the situation has prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to convene an Emergency Committee meeting and declare the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. This designation underscores the global threat posed by the rapidly spreading virus.

DRC Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba has cautioned that the reported figures are preliminary, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing to confirm the exact cause of all fatalities. The outbreak's epicenter is in Ituri Province, a region characterized by significant population movement due to its status as a gold mining area. This high mobility is a key factor contributing to the virus's swift transmission, not only within the DRC but also across its borders.

The current strain, Bundibugyo, lacks a vaccine or specific treatment, adding to the challenge of containing this deadly epidemic.
