Consumer Prices: Inflation Rate in Saxony Rises Significantly

Saxony has experienced a noticeable uptick in consumer prices, with the inflation rate climbing to 2.8 percent in July. This marks an increase from the 2.3 percent recorded in June, according to preliminary data from the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. The rise in inflation is primarily attributed to higher energy costs, particularly at the gas pump.

Motorists in Saxony faced significantly higher prices, paying 21.9 percent more for fuel in July compared to the same month last year. The cost of alcohol and tobacco products also saw an increase, rising by 4.8 percent year-on-year. In contrast, food prices experienced a more modest rise of only 0.7 percent.

As the new school year approaches, prices for essential school supplies have also climbed. Stationery saw a 2.8 percent price increase, while textbooks rose by 2.3 percent. Pen and pencil prices jumped by 8.9 percent. However, consumers benefited from summer sales, with clothing prices decreasing by 2.3 percent during this period.
