Convicted murderer's TikTok account deleted after investigative story

The main TikTok account associated with Elijah Oyebode, a convicted murderer on death row at the Ibara Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Nigeria, has been deleted. This action follows an investigative report by the Nigerian Tribune and PREMIUM TIMES that revealed Oyebode was hosting live sessions from within the correctional facility, a clear violation of established laws.

The investigation uncovered that Oyebode operated at least two TikTok accounts from inside the prison, where he received monetary gifts from thousands of unsuspecting viewers. He was convicted in 2016 for the murder of Rofiat Adebisi, a final-year student at Osun State University. During a monitored TikTok Live session on April 16, 2026, Oyebode alluded to the extent of digital access within the facility, stating, "An individual may have two to three phones. Facebook and TikTok are full of prisoners. They will not disclose their location to anyone."

A second account linked to Oyebode was identified through forensic analysis and witness testimony. This account was used to impersonate Omolola Awoyele, a well-known TikTok Live host. Ms. Awoyele reported that Oyebode created an account using her name and picture, potentially for online scams. After she confronted him, he apologized and removed her image. Prior to the publication of the investigation on August 1, the account remained active. A check on August 4 revealed the account had been deleted. It remains unclear whether TikTok, prison authorities, or Oyebode himself removed the account. The Nigerian Correctional Service has not yet issued a statement regarding the published investigation.
